Dr. Scott Overholser – Bleaching: Which method is right for you?

Dr. Scott Overholser uses two types of tooth whitening in his Chicago dental office.  In-office, or “laser bleaching” as it is often called, is a treatment process completed by trained staff in a dental office.  Initially, the teeth are completely isolated by carefully covering the exposed gingiva.   A gel is then applied to the teeth consisting of 35% hydrogen peroxide in 20 minute intervals.  Most patients complete 3-4 intervals during a typical bleaching session.  When the process is finished, bleaching is complete and the teeth are significantly whiter.  Obviously, the main advantage here is convenience and speed.

Another type of bleaching offered in Dr. Scott Overholser’s office consists of take-home trays.  In this process, impressions are taken of the upper and lower teeth in the dental office.  Models are fabricated from these impressions, and trays are processed using the models of patients’ teeth.  These trays are then used for an hour daily for 2-3 weeks.  The end result is similar to in-office bleaching, but it takes longer and is slightly less convenient.  Ultimately, a combination of the two types of tooth whitening yields the best results.
